In January, my son Ross Ticknor and I are launching The Messy Studio, a weekly series of conversations, anecdotes, ideas and information that artists may find helpful in their work and careers.

Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts and Conversations (Squeegee Press, 2017) is currently available for purchase at www.coldwaxbook.com. Jerry McLaughlin and I are very pleased with the result of our two-year project to bring comprehensive information to the growing community of artists using cold wax, and are excited to share the words and work of nearly 100 artists from around the world who are exploring the medium. The next project for Squeegee Press will be a full length teaching video based on the book and on workshop material. We are in planning stages for the video; no release date has yet been set. Please join the mailing list at www.coldwaxbook.com to receive updates on this and other future projects.

New Mexico Studio
2017 was a busy year, following the publication of Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations (co-authored by Jerry McLaughlin, Squeegee Press) last winter. The book has been very well received by artists and was positively reviewed by John Seed of Huffington Post — The Cold Wax Book is Hot, and by Kirkus Reviews.
We've nearly sold out of our first printing; the second printing will be available in early 2018. The business side of Squeegee Press has been a demanding sideline all year, but Jerry and I are both enjoying our ongoing collaboration, the growth of our company and the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from artists around the world.
As 2018 begins, I'm back in New Mexico and preparing for two upcoming exhibits, at Telluride Gallery of Fine Art (Telluride, Colorado) opening March 1, and at Jen Tough Gallery in Benicia, California, opening May 11. I'll be back in Ireland in March, where I will be an artist in residence for the 6th time at Ballinglen Arts Foundation, and will teach one workshop. This is my year to scale back on teaching, and I have only one other planned; in September, I'll be teaching a water-based media class in Spain with my friend and colleague Janice Mason Steeves (the class is full with a waiting list.)
My work has undergone some changes in the past year, with definite shapes and value contrast playing a larger role, and I've also been exploring printmaking and mixed media work. Right now, I have a stack of fresh panels in my New Mexico studio and I'm looking forward to some uninterrupted painting time and seeing what may unfold.
